The Story of OSLO

Nearly a decade ago, we set out to create something different in Washington, D.C.—a new kind of apartment that offered real privacy, thoughtful design, and a strong sense of community, all at a fair price.

We didn’t start OSLO to chase a trend. We started it because we saw a gap. Most young professionals in D.C. had two options: pay too much for a tiny studio or get a spot in a rundown group house and navigate shared rent, furnishings, and other roommates’ leasing timelines. We believed there had to be a better way.

OSLOshaw: Where It Began

Our first project, OSLOshaw at 1734 6th Street NW, was a mid-century apartment building that we reimagined from scratch. Working with architect Chung Cao (DEPdesigns.net), we developed a new approach: micro-units within units—private bedrooms and bathrooms built around beautiful shared kitchens and living rooms.

At the time, there were no apartments offering single room occupancy. We didn’t know if it would work. But it did. Quickly. OSLOshaw filled up within weeks and created a community of interesting, creative people. It sparked friendships, love stories and even some babies.

Growing the Idea

Each new OSLO building pushed the concept further.

  • OSLOatlas: we increased the bedroom count to five per unit and designed everything from scratch. The building’s spacious common areas and near one-to-one bathroom ratio made it a success.
  • OSLOadmo: we tested how modern design could fit into a historic neighborhood. We introduced an above-grade courtyard and a striking blackened steel staircase by Hiroshi Jacobs, blending old and new.
  • OSLOhill: Capitol Hill was our biggest transformation yet—gutting a former medical office to create six-bedroom units with private bathrooms, luxury kitchens, and a new elevator. It remains our most ambitious vision of OSLO living.

What OSLO Means Today

We never set out to build a co-living company. OSLO was—and still is—about creating apartments that respect the way people actually want to live: private space when you need it, community when you want it.
We design and manage every building ourselves. That means high-quality finishes, reliable service, and clean, well-maintained spaces. Our leases are simple. Our values are clear. And even as the rental landscape shifts, we stay committed to making apartment living better—unit by unit, building by building.
